TRIP TO THE HOLY LAND

I am writing to see if you are interested in joining me as I take a group to St. George's College, Jerusalem, in 2012. Having stayed there many times, myself, I can assure you that it is safe, comfortable (private or shared room with private bath and great food) and that the tour leaders are knowledgeable and well versed in all that has gone on in the historical past as well as what is going on presently. The college is set in a garden oasis, within short walking distance to most of the primary places to see in Jerusalem.
1) St. George's College, "Palestine of Jesus" course, May 23-June 5, 2012. Cost: $2905, which includes all meals, accommodations and fees.2) Healing Touch Level One, June 6-8, 2012. 6th/7th: course work at St. George's 8th: spent in local hospitals using HT techniques. One does not have to take the "Palestine of Jesus" course to take the HT class and vice versa.3) Optional side trips, following the HT class, for those not taking "Palestine of Jesus" course. Costs to be determined for HT class and side trips. There will be opportunities for me to take those interested to some of my favorite sights. St. George's College is a one block-plus walk to the American Colony Hotel (where all the news people and politicians hang out) and a five minute walk to the Damascus Gate, one of the major entrances into the Old Walled City. We will meet with Naim Ateek (if he is not out of town) and the Sabeel staff as well as other notable persons of peace: Christian, Jewish and Muslim. Depending on what is on the calendar at the time, we will be able to attend musical performances and do other things of cultural note.Go to St. George's College Jerusalem (http://www.sgcjerusalem.org/) to find out more about the classes and the college.Go to Healing Touch Program (www.healingtouchprogram.com/) to Level I class (in the section on Classes) to find out about the class.more I urge you to start saving your shekels so you can join me for this wonderful experience. Any questions, email me or call: 503-230-2331.I am working on getting airfare estimates, which are separate from the course costs. Frequent Flyer miles are good for such a long trip. If you want to be kept informed of the costs and of the plans as they are finalized, please let me know. If this is not your cup of mint tea (the specialty there) that is fine, just let me know so I don't bother you with additional emails.Shalom, Salaam, Peace! Constance

INTUITIVE MIND COURSE, LEVEL 1
offered in Seattle at Northwest Hospital
January 21-22, 2012
Nancy Rebecca and Becca Gaughan, instructors

This is the foundational course that teaches you the beginning Mystery School Techniques. This course is 16 hours in length and taught in one full weekend. This is the class for everyone. This may be your very first exposure to meditation and energy work, or you may have taken spiritual energy courses for years. The beauty about these techniques is that they meet you right where you are in your awareness and then take you just a little further. This is thought of as the beginning class, however do not confuse that with a beginners class.

I can summarize it very easily. A student came to the first class 10 years ago and said, “I have been doing spiritual work for 25 years and I am here to see if you can teach me something that I do not already know!” Then on Sunday at day’s end of the workshop, she raised her hand and said, “I have been doing spiritual work for 25 years and after this class I realize this is the first time I have actually done spiritual work!”

As the participant you will be able to:

Learn a conscious, active form of meditation that you can do anywhere.

Learn to cleanse and repair your own energy field.

Experience conscious awareness of your own energetic space to manage and enhance your life and boundaries.

Use your Intuition to “read” your own energetic field.

You will go home knowing your Intuitive Style

Emotional Memories (learn to finally be able to take the energy out of them so you can move forward in life).

Learn how to read your own past lives.

Really know what grounding means.

Our Instructors can “see” your energy field while you meditate providing you great insight into your intuitive style.

Mentoring, Accreditation: Another Point of View…………

The only Constant is Change

When I was looking for a schools of nursing to attend, one of the first questions I asked, “Is it accredited?” Many people asked the same question when they are exploring training or educational opportunities. HTP has an excellent solid program. The natural evolution and progression is to become accredited. Becoming accredited is a lot of work, effort and costly; but it brings respect and trust. With the successful spread of HT across the planet we need to follow the natural progression of having accreditation. Do I like more paper work? No! Do I understand and support the need for these processes? YES! In the last few classes I have taught or been in, some nurses have expressed their appreciation of the ANCC accreditation. When we get the next national accreditation, our work will be supported by more administrators; bring more respect to our work and our Healing Touch Program. It is a lot of work and costs for HTP, but it will benefit each of us as well as the program, the health care system and most of all the clients/patients.

Standardizing the mentoring process came about from an OBSERVED need. Some students were coming to Level 5 very well prepared and others had inadequate mentoring, leaving them unprepared for Level 5. This slowed their progress down costing them time and money. This was unacceptable. Janna Moll spent 3 years developing an excellent mentorship course to bring training and assistance to the mentors, to new mentors and standardized the process so that all the students were adequately mentored and prepared. The Qualified Mentor course is well thought-out, has a lot of depth, good handouts and forms to assist the mentors. All Qualified Mentors can set their own fees; there is a suggested amount, but one can set their own fee, have a sliding scale or what will work for the student and mentor. People chose to mentor, but it does take time and people’s time is valuable as is their experience. Other professions and occupations charge for mentoring, supervision, internship or whatever it may be called. In many professions there are supervisory groups where a practitioner can bring a challenging situation or one they would like advice with from more experienced providers. The fees for these groups often start at $75 per hour up. Janet Mentgen understood the value of mentoring and set the process.

The pilot test is to help standardize the final test itself. This is common in most testing situations; developing a fair test is a lot of work; many HTCP’s, HT elders and HTCI’s have been working on this for over a year. The pilot test will have questions which will be discarded; that’s why it is called a pilot test; that is the purpose of the pilot test, to weed out unfair or poorly stated questions. This will be the first standard test in energy medicine. I have been asked a number of times to write or review questions for nursing tests/broads, as is done in many professions and occupations. This is an entry level test. It is not designed to make anyone fail. Yes, some may have to take it over, but lots of people take tests over, many attorneys take their broads 2-3 times before passing. Set your intention to pass the exam and do the suggested studying prior to taking the test. HTP has provided a Study Guide.

Our Community Colleges have a process where you have to present valid identification before they will proctor you. There is a $25 fee, but this saves you having to travel to a site to take the test. It is much more convenient to take a test in your own community. In other professions, people have to travel to test sites, costing airfare, lodging, food and often the test is more than one day.

The Healing Touch Program is not the same as some of our unethical financial/banking corporations; there are ethical banking/financial corporations. HTP wants you to succeed and have our beautiful work accepted and available to more people. This is about having our work, this solid excellent program respected, getting Healing Touch into main steam
Health care with respect & integrity, considering the well being of the public and people getting paid for their work, time and education properly.

Respectfully with love,

Keela Marshall, RN, CNP, HTCP, HTCI

CERTIFICATION
By Barbara Dahl, BSN, RN, HTCI

Oregon’s Governor has signed a bill that goes into effect January 1, 2012 that has implications for all Healing Touch Practitioners every where. The bill basically exempts practitioners of alternative modalities who are certified by their respective programs from regulation by the Massage Board. The handwriting is on the wall. Certify.

Before Accreditation, certification was a challenging but doable process. Now that we have achieved respectability through Accreditation, the process is a veritable minefield of hoops to jump through starting with mentorship from a “qualified” mentor who has paid a substantial sum to take a course in mentoring, and then has earned the privilege of selling her mentoring services for substantial sums to mentees. Janna Moll who is the instructor for the online course charges her mentees $75 a month and it goes on for many months. Mentorship is not a requirement of Accreditation but rather a requirement of the program for completion and completion is a requirement for certification.

Many certified practitioners are now facing renewal and must take an exam – even those of us who have taught in the program over 20 years -- a requirement of Accreditation. The trial exam costs $100. It is a trial exam in that it has never been offered before and the exam questions are being tested. There is a handbook you can download from the website. My initial impression of the questions is that some are vague and designed to result in a curve, i.e., some practitioners are destined to fail – and that will legitimize the exam. Plus, others are just plain silly. Should you take the trial exam for $100 and fail, you can then take the final exam for another $200. To take the exam you must find a qualified proctor and pay that proctor. I believe proctors are something like notaries; they don’t know you from Adam but they have a little seal from the State that stamps approval on whatever it is you need.

The cost of becoming a certified practitioner adds up. You do the addition. Certainly Accreditation puts heavy demands on the “corporate” structure to comply with all the requirements and that costs money.

It’s not hard to read between the lines. I have some strong feelings about the changes in the Healing Touch Program under Accreditation but, bottom line, I love and value this work and I care about all of you. I wish it didn’t all come down to money. Janet (Mentgen) was gifted in relating the micro to the macro, “as above so below.” We need only to look at what’s going on in our global culture today to gain a perspective on the changes within our program. I would like to encourage dialogue. I know that others hold different thoughts and feelings. Please share.

Thanks to Susan Kiley for her Yahoo reports and to Linnie Thomas for further clarification of the Oregon law. This is landmark legislation and is sure to influence other States in governance of energy medicine.

Love and blessings, Barb

HERBS: A PLACE TO BEGIN

Do plants talk to you? Have you felt the calling to learn more about the healing powers of plants? Do you have a garden full of herbs that you don’t know how to use? Then you may want to join us for this yearlong exploration of herbal healing for beginners.

In this series of workshop, we will dive into the green world of plants, with a special focus each month on one system of the body and its associated medicinal plants. We will look deeply into the world of healing with plants: drawing the plant, peering deep into its amazing botany with a hand lens, and going on a guided shamanic journey to the Spirit of plants, asking to be shown their medicine and their gifts as a plant allies. We will have a special focus on the native and naturalized herbs to be found in our own neighborhoods.

Each month we will also focus on making medicinal products: tinctures, teas and capsules, salves, oils and poultices, not only talking about plants, but also getting hands-on experience in making & using home herbal remedies.

At this time in human history, it is especially important to be able to walk into our own backyards to find and use what is growing there, to call on our plant ally relationship for its healing, to work with the plants to heal ourselves and our families, and ultimately, the planet.

• The Respiratory System: Let’s kick those nasty viruses! In November, we will focus on the respiratory system, with special attention to prevention and early treatment of colds & flu. We will do a guided shamanic journey to ask for a plant healing guide in our life. We will make herbal honeys and teas, using herbs & medicinal mushrooms that are fabulous in blocking colds and flu. This workshop gives students a great way to prepare and protect against the season of viral illness

.• The Winter quarter series begins in January 2012, focusing on Herbal Basics, such as the basic vocabulary of herbal actions, making herbal preparations: tinctures, capsules, and infusions/teas. We will have our hands on as much living plant material as we can find. In February we will move into the Ear, Nose and Throat system: colds and sore throats, middle ear infections, sinus infections, etc., learning to make herbal ear oil, nasal steams, and how to do lymph massage for clearing congestion. We will finish winter quarter in March by focusing on the musculoskeletal system, looking at the use of herbs for sprains& strains, muscle spasm, back problems and chronic joint pain. We will focus on making and using infused herbal oils for pain relief, herbal foot baths and internal herbs for pain. The series will continue into Spring and Summer quarters.

Details:= Respiratory System: Sunday November 13, 2011.

Winter quarter classes will start in January 2012. Schedule TBA

Time: 10 am - 3 pm.
Location will be at Raven Room on Johnson Point in NE Olympia; directions sent on registration.

Introductory November class is $75.00. Subsequent quarter series are $210.00 each (Winter, Spring, Summer)

*Feedback from past students:“I have recently completed another one of Janet’s classes. She is an amazing teacher with a wealth of knowledge in not only herbal medicine but with the spirits of the plants, easy herbal remedies, healing techniques and a wonderful ability to present complex “technical” information in an easy to absorb format. Her classes are fun & filled with useful, practical things to incorporate into your everyday life. Her shamanic healing background & personal relationship with plant spirits make her classes a very special experience. She has changed how I view the 'weeds' of my yard forever!” Debbie Petosa,Mukilteo

"Janet Partlow's herbal medicine program gracefully blends the traditions of plant spirit medicine, western medicine, and Celtic shamanic healing. Her program has given me a thorough and multifaceted introduction to this powerful, magical and beautiful way of healing." Shannon Russell-White, Federal Way

HOT TIME IN TEXAS
Dawn Warnaca

Remember the Alamo? To be honest, I remember the line, I know there was some kind of battle fought and that famous people died there, but that was about all I remembered from Elementary School US history class.

The Healing Touch International Conference was in San Antonio a couple of weeks ago. Mike and I both attended and wanted to have a few days of vacation in the sun, along with our participation at the conference. We arrived three days early and had time to go to the top of the Tower of Americas (reminded me a lot of the Seattle Space Needle - except for the bats.... hundreds and hundreds of flying bats and it was DAY TIME. Only small part of me was disappointed to miss the batman like experience of walking among them - we were not allowed outside). We feasted, walked and took the little boat tour along the River Walk, shopped at Market Square, and yes... visited the Alamo. There is much to be felt as you visit this site - where freedom from oppression had such a costly and yet powerfully inspirational toll. The muted colors of stone and Oak trees are thoughtfully separated from the glare of modern vending machines. A building code, put in place protects this site from future encroachment from even shadows - all buildings must be built in such a way that the sun can always shine on the Alamo.

We also visited the Natural Bridge Caverns and took the basic tour that gives the history of college students spelunking on private property (with permission) and discovering this amazing underground beauty. We were so impressed, that we turned right around and joined the next tour into another part of the caverns. We also enjoyed the pool and were more than a little shocked when walking from the lounge chair to the pool (not very far) just about blistered the bottoms of our feet! Flip flops allowed for a much more graceful entrance into the water : ).

I got to attend my first Instructor meeting. There were about 80 present, and it was a wonderful gathering time that introduced physically the faces, with voices and printed names I’ve become familiar with from Energy Magazine and phone call conferences . We had a workshop on the business end of teaching, but I think what I loved the most was being in a room full of folks that love the energy of Energy Work.

Mike got roped into volunteering (by his trusty wife), and I often had to use the modern technology of texting to find him... hauling books for the book vendor, or cutting streamers for the opening ceremony. I wish I had the picture to attach of Mike, holding the streamer up to his nose for a measurement tool. Mike was not the only man at the conference, though women did outnumber them - except at the Men’s breakfast set up by Healing Touch Professional Association. It was very cool to see over 20 men gathered together in obvious enjoyment of not only the food, company, but getting to know each other and where they were in their journey with Healing Touch.

Conference was inspiring; my overwhelmingly favorite speaker was Ann Marie Chiasson who spoke on the Ceremony of Healing and gave us all active, easy and fun tools for clearing our own fields in a workshop called Healing the Healer. I was also quite moved to not only hear - but meet Richard Shulman, the musician that wrote First Rites. The four days roared past, with cowboy boots, line dancing, a psychic comic and dress up dinner. We had a blast... wish you were there.

Mandala in Sanskrit means “sacred circle” and is used as a creative process for self–discovery and personal transformation. Using techniques and a modern interpretation developed by Dr. Judith Cornell, you will be guided through the mandala process in a personal journey from darkness into light.

Experience the illuminating process of going within, becoming aware of all that you are. Historically the mandala has been used as a meditative focus--a means of turning inward to stillness and quiet to discover the inner truth about your Self. Meditation, visualization, guided imagery, the use of music and creating the mandala are tools used during this journey. The newly created mandala reflects a practice for centering, self-discovery, healing and growth. This sacred process touches our very soul, our essence and brings us into the Light. No art experience is necessary; the emphasis is on what comes forth. This safe, supportive method is a way to awaken to our inner Truth, Light and Wisdom.

We will come together as a group, look at the history of the mandala, create sacred space, work with our own intentions and create our own mandala as we return to our inner light and awaken.

I invite you to experience the mystery of the mandala.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH
Here are a few new resources for the continuing process of personal growth.

1. Sister Joan Chittister, a Benedictine, has started “Monasteries of the Heart” which she describes as “a movement of seekers interested in becoming part of a community of seekers, either online or with others of their own choosing, who form to support one another in shaping their spiritual lives around Benedictine values and priorities.

“Groups and individuals will be devoted to Benedictine values but not necessarily bound by geographic stability. It is a monastery “without walls.” Communities may gather for prayer, discussion, and reflection — in families, parishes, neighborhoods, intentional communities, prisons, and on the internet.

“Monasteries of the Heart will also honor the enduring hermit tradition in a new way in a society in which great numbers of people, both young and elderly, live alone with little or no particularized support for their spiritual life.

“Monasteries of the Heart is especially mindful of celebrating beauty, honoring the sacred and poetic word, and promoting nonviolence as a way of life and method of social change.

“Monasteries of the Heart is a response to requests to develop a new form of Benedictine spirituality for a new face of society. “

You need not be Catholic or even Christian to pursue this path. Here is the Website: http://monasteriesoftheheart.org/

2. OK, so sometimes it’s hard to find time to meditate, but don’t we all have ONE MINUTE? I followed up on an article in this month’s Spirituality and Health magazine and decided to give it a try. Check out the website at http://www.onemomentmeditation.com/

There is a charge for the weekly updates and lessons, but subscribers to Spirituality and Health get a 25% discount. I bet that goes if you pick it up on the newsstand.

3. Eckhart Tolle TV is a great resource for those of you who are trying to integrate his philosophy into your lives. I subscribe to his service and download the monthly talks and Q&A sessions to listen to at my leisure. He has interesting topics like Sufism, The Course in Miracles, etc. There are various packages available, including a free trial. https://learnmore.eckharttolletv.com/default.aspx

NEW SCALAR HEALING TECHNIQUE

Over the last several months, I’ve been tweaking and polishing a new way to apply Scalar energies, and I feel it’s now ready to introduction to the public. The technique, which I call “Trans-Scalar Healing,” combines Dr. Valerie Hunt’s Bio-Scalar process along with channeled Circle of Grace guidance from the Brotherhood of Light for grounding and clearing both the meridian and chakra systems, the Temple of Healing process from my own Spiritual Journeys Program, powerful Angelic assistance (intruder releasement and soul retrieval) adopted from Greg McHugh’s book “The New Regression Therapy,” and the Healing Command and witnessing processes from Theta Healing, which includes the assistance of Creator for recreating the highest degree of holistic health and wellness that is appropriate for the client at that time.

This is all described in a detailed 40-page step-by-step manual in .pdf format which is available as a free download from my website – go to www.howardbatie.com and under Physical Healing, click on "Trans-Scalar Healing". The manual’s download link is near the bottom of that page. The manual also includes a sample remote healing session, with the permission of the remote client, of course.

I’ve found that Trans-Scalar Healing is remarkably effective for self-healing, local healing sessions with clients in your office, and especially so for remote healing sessions. I’d like get input from other practitioners who are experienced with providing remote healings. Constructive criticism and helpful suggestions will only help to make it even more beneficial to those who use it and those who receive it.

And I must also mention that in my experience with this technique, working closely with the Angelic Kingdom has significantly strengthened my own intuitive abilities and deepened the trust I have in myself as a spiritual healing facilitator. With this technique, I’ve developed the ability to work blind (no information whatsoever from or about the client other than name and location) and it’s very heartening to constantly receive feedback from remote clients saying “You’re right on!”

Try it for yourself!

In love and light,

ADVERTISE TOGETHER

Wondering how to advertise your practice?

One idea is to pay for a $495 ad in The Natural Choice Directory – The smallest add is a 2x2 and runs for $495 for the year in print, and on line. If we purchase early, the on-line begins now - this a bit free to feed into the 2012 directory.

Another idea might be to combine a web page - It would be called the Tacoma/Pierce County Healing Touch Team.... we could do a five page web site and each practitioner could have one page. If we had Keela from Seattle, Dawn and Dale from the Tacoma, Sherri from Olympia, HTPA in Lacy, and maybe Anna Marie and Sharon would want to join, and even get Jeannie and Marilyn to join from Idaho

With the $495 for the printed directory ad, we can also advertise 4 events over the course of 2012. If four of us went together, we could each advertise and event....

Ideas abound... anyone else want in on the discussion?

Keela and I are serious about developing an ad campaign and would like to do so in the next month to six weeks.

PRESENT MOMENT REMINDER
From Eckhart Tolle

Use whatever challenge comes into your life as a kind of fuel for the flame of consciousness. That is done through surrender to what is. Some people may need more of that than others. If you choose presence in your daily life you may not need the drastic challenges.

HT Opportunities!

We have two opportunities for practicing Healing Touch. The first is a one-time occasion; the other on-going. Please consider helping out! This is particularly opportune if you are a Level 4 student in need of some of your 100 treatments.

WOMEN’S RETREAT

Last year Barb Dahl and I were asked to provide Healing Touch treatments at a women’s retreat at Rainbow Lodge, near North Bend. Our interfaith friend, Reverend Catherine Fransson of Seattle First Baptist Church, is the facilitator of the retreat.

The treatments were much appreciated and very well received. Barb and I had a wonderful time in that beautiful setting.

Unfortunately, this year neither Barb nor I are available, but Catherine would still love to be able to offer Healing Touch to the retreat participants.

They have time set aside from 12:30 to 4:00 PM on Saturday, October 29th, 2011. It would be for chair sessions only, so no need to bring tables.

We are not paid for this service, but it is a good practice opportunity. If you are a Level 4, it’s a chance to chart a few more of your 100 sessions. If you are a new practitioner, we might be able to pair you with an experienced person so you could build your skills.

Please contact Christina Brugman at cebrug@aol.com or call 425.821.3605 to offer your services or ask questions. Please reply by September 15 so Catherine can plan her schedule.

PATIENT IN REHAB

Keela Marshall has been contacted by Healing Touch colleagues in Alaska to request Healing Touch support for a 24-year-old man who is in rehab at University Hospital. He fell off a mountain and sustained terrible injuries.

While in Alaska he was receiving Healing Touch treatments and would like to continue.

This would be an on-going project. Ideally, we can form a team of practitioners who can see him several times a week. Again, we will not be paid for this service but it is a chance to get in some practice or document a number of sessions.

Please contact Keela if you are willing to help. kwellness@earthlink.net or 206.545.7387. We would like to start as soon as possible.

LETTER FROM JANET
by Barbara Dahl, RN, BSN, HTCI

While going through the papers of Janet Mentgen, founder of the Healing Touch Program, a letter was found that she had written in response to questions sent from students who had just completed Level 5. The letter contains the ESSENCE of Healing Touch and is an important touchstone during this time of transition for the organization. My thanks to Cynthia Hutchison for sharing it with the instructors. The letter is dated January 4, 2002 and includes the following excerpts:

There are no specific answers as each individual must grow and progress at their own rate and time…Regarding the improper use of technique in a sequence, who is to say what is proper and correct. My experience in working with technique is that it is simply a guideline to get us going in the right direction. From there, the energy is the appropriate guide.

For me, as my practice has developed I have become more gentle and use fewer techniques. This is the style that I have grown into and it has taken a while to become comfortable with less. This goes for the drama as well. Healing does not require a show that reflects how good the healer is with their techniques.

Regarding the improper choice of modality for the case at hand, I would consider this to be lack of a basic knowledge and inexperience on the part of the healer. Working from principle, not technique, is the best way to avoid this problem. Use a full body technique to start in order to bring balance and harmony to the client… Then focus on the specific area that is in trouble, selecting a modality that will address the problem. Finish with a closing technique to bring balance and grounding to the client. Some techniques can be used alone and fulfill all of these steps by simple intention of the practitioner…Our intent is to keep the work simple… I would not consider myself to have any expertise of the Level (3 ) chelation technique until I had done at least 100 sessions and received (my italics) at least 20.

We cannot put healing energy in a box with a specific outcome; it is what it is. Our task as practitioners is to learn to observe from a point of truth and then create a language to describe the work.”

It would seem that summer has finally arrived in the Pacific Northwest. Enjoy.

THE UNDYING SOUL
by Barbara Dahl, BSN, RN, HTCI

In his book, The Undying Soul: A Cancer Doctor’s Discovery, Dr. Stephen J. Iacoboni shares his soul’s journey from an “ancient faith” to scientific atheism to the mystical union of both. The lessons contained in his book are the same lessons I’ve learned through my study and practice of Healing Touch. Sadly, Dr. Iacoboni traveled the journey alone because Western medicine continues to resist transcendent realities. Those mystical realities, after all, can’t be tested in a lab or even replicated person to person. He is, however, in the good company of doctors Bernie Siegel, Larry Dossey, Andrew Weil, Richard Gerber, Mehmet Oz, and Dean Ornish, among others.

Healing Touch, on the other hand, not only provided me with lessons of the soul, it blessed me with companions on the journey. While you and I can comfortably sit around sharing mystical experiences, it is done at some professional risk with a medical colleague. Dr. Iacoboni’s teachers and spiritual guides were his terminally ill patients who had nothing to lose and who trusted this compassionate man with gifts of the spirit.

We’re fortunate that Dr. Iacoboni has settled in Washington State as co-director of the Kennewick General Hospital Hematology-Oncology program. I hope he knows about the American Holistic Medical Association where he wouldn’t be taking professional risks to share matters of the heart and spirit.

Blessings, Barb

SPIRAL of 5ths BASIC and ADVANCED TUNING FORK TRAINING
This interactive 16 hour training covers information about stress reduction and relaxation through the application of pairs of tuning forks as sound therapy at the ears. After lecture, discussion, demonstration and practice participants will be able to describe effects of sound in the body, assess patient/client sensitivity to tuning forks used as sound therapy, list over-activation symptoms and counter-indications, define beginning session protocols and apply pairs of Spiral of 5ths Tuning forks on themselves, patients/clients and their families with a range of physical, emotional and mental complaints, symptoms or themes in a variety of settings including long-term and end-of-life care.
A tuning fork is designed to precisely emit one single frequency (a pure sound). Tuning forks are used in the realms of medicine, music, and science for a variety of applications. They provide a nice complement to Healing Touch and other Energy Medicine work. Their precision makes them ideal for use in sound therapy, using the capacity of the human body to resonate with pure sound.
Arden Wilken’s brings this class to Seattle on September 17-18, 2011. Please join us and learn how to use tuning forks for stress reduction and relaxation for yourself and your clients. Class space is very limited. Please call or email (details below) for a full flyer and registration details.
I hope you’ll join us!

Dawn Warnaca wrote the following reflection for Energy Magazine after my article about emergency preparedness appeared. It is presented here in its entirety. Christina

HIS NAME IS EARL

A journalized reflection on my steps toward emergency preparedness…
in my own backyard

By Dawn Warnaca, HTCP, AA

I don’t like my neighbor. Well, the truth is, I don’t know my neighbor. I do know that next door - in my case that means across the yard, past the gazebo, beyond almost 2 acres of pasture, the fence and a wide, wild, dense patch of blackberry bushes - is a single wide trailer. A single wide trailer, surrounded by all the negative stereotypical visuals that might conjure up in your mind; boarded up windows, giant blue tarps, old tires and a single, muddy, deeply-rutted driveway. I don’t like my neighbor; but the truth is, I don’t know my neighbor.

This all started with my idea of helping my community, or my country, or maybe even helping out in places like Haiti or Japan. I wanted to join a disaster team, a Healing Touch Disaster Relief Rescue Operation Society. I had it in mind that I could be of service to firefighters at a 9/11 scene, or earthquake survivors suffering trauma in some Super Dome. My thinking also included my training; certification; coming HTP accreditation; all these verifiable skills that could help victims as well as rescue personnel. If only I knew how!

When I read about the opportunity to become part of the Healing Touch Professional Association (HTPA) Disaster Team, I sent an e-mail to express my interest. I received a reply suggesting the ACEP’s One Voice Consortium requirement to complete the on-line Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) courses Incident Command System (ICS)-100, ICS-200, and ICS-700 classes. It just so happened that my life was in slow-motion at that time. At least it felt that way. I had recently graduated from community college, and more recently quit a part-time paying, but over-time stressful job. I was still under my own feet around the house waiting for my Healing Touch business to take off gang-busters. Each FEMA class required a few hours, which I spaced over about ten days. Truth be told, I scored below 80% on one course exam and had to swallow my pride and retake the whole thing. I sent off to HTPA that I had my certificates of completion from FEMA, then sat back to await my call to heroism.

A few months later, I noticed again a volunteer opportunity posted in the HTPA Newsletter. It seemed to offer options that I could choose from this time, like military outreach, disaster response or I could even share my own interest. My problem was, I just wanted to do the work, and I didn’t care very much what it looked like. A few e-mails later, I volunteered for a 3 member committee to lay the foundation for HTPA’s Community Connections. During one meeting we were identifying just what disaster response really looks like. I was actually a bit startled at my own realization that flying off to Timbuktu to help complete strangers was far more appealing than sitting down with my neighbors to plan for a local disaster. I hung up from that phone call inspired to toss off my apathetic veneer, pull on my cape, and save Gotham City right here in my own back yard.

ORGANIZING MY NEIGHBORS
I called my local volunteer fire department. Mind you, I have made it very clear to my husband – because I know these volunteers - that if an emergency happens here to call the kids, call a vet, call a cab, but for heaven’s sake, don’t call 911. Instead, drag me to the car and get me to the nearest hospital (nearly an hour), to someone that really knows how to take care of me. Small town gossip aside, I called the Fire Chief and told him I wanted to do some kind of neighborhood emergency planning. You know, like Neighbor Watch, only different. I was sure either he or the real fire department, or someone he knew had something in place, so why re-invent the wheel? To my surprise, he thought that was just a nifty idea, but none of the organizations that he knew of really fit into our type of rural atmosphere. We talked for about 10 minutes when I got the bright idea to create my own plan. I talked about a simple form that would ask my closest neighbors their names, who lived with them, what their health issues were, and their emergency phone contacts. The Chief hung up the phone saying, “If you come up with some kind of something and get super rich selling it around the country, let me know, I could use the money”. I chuckled at his response and found myself willing to give it a try.

I typed up that form; I even added a line asking about pets and farm animals. I printed out ten, and got in my car that very afternoon and drove around farm to farm and dropped them in screen doors or handed them out in person to those who happened to be home. I told those I met in person that I would type up the information and make a Community phone book. Unfortunately, I forgot to put my name and phone number on the form. Details… details.

FACING UNEXPECTED FEELINGS
The hardest place for me to go was to that trailer. It was almost the closest, but it took me the longest to get to, and I almost didn’t go. I had purposely avoided it. Coming back home I was surprised at the timing, I had made the phone call to the Chief, typed up the form, printed it off, and driven to nine neighbors in well under two hours. I would not be late for dinner. I passed my own house, and full of trepidation turned instead into the driveway of the Trailer House Next Door. Everyone else I have visited, I know. Over the years my kids sold them Christmas wrap, my cows have tromped through their gardens, my cat died in their dog house. I have lived here over thirty years, yet this person, this farm, this story, I do not know.

The Blackberry bushes are close, the trees are tall, I don’t know who lives here, or if they have a ferocious pit bull chained to the rotting front porch. I breathe and begin to logic – if there was a vicious dog, I would have heard barking from my back yard, I would have heard barking when I drove in. I would hear barking now, and yet as I listen beyond my breathing, it is very, very quiet. I step out of my car, and begin my approach. Something, a shadow, a movement within announces that my knock will be answered, and for only a moment, the door opens just a little. There stands an elderly man with thick glasses, a bit of white hair, and all hunched over. I stammer my spiel, and hand over the form. There is a nodding of his head and a guttural sound as he takes the paper and closes the door. Speechless and relieved that I have not been attacked, I hurry back to my car full of questioning who I just met, can he speak, can he read? What did I miss?

TRY, TRY, and TRY AGAIN
Not one form was returned. I didn’t understand this because one of the neighbors was as excited as I was by the idea of this neighborhood phone book; at least they said so. In the meantime I called and left a message with the Red Cross, the one national group I am familiar with. One of my private motivations was to get professional training and (laughingly) covertly infiltrate an existing organization. It could be an undercover sleeper-type operation. Once I got on the inside, once THEY knew me, I could and of course would, bring Healing Touch right along. It would be a natural springboard into offering what I really want to offer. The Red Cross never calls back.

A couple of weeks later, I revealed my failures to the committee. They encouraged me to call the Red Cross back, and look into other organizations like Citizens Emergency Response Teams (CERT) and Green Cross. I didn’t commit to anything, but I reluctantly agreed to consider it. See, part of me thinks that the right door opens at the right time, and if the Red Cross didn’t want me, then why should I force the issue? I didn’t know one of these organizations from another but I sent a few e-mails, and made a couple more calls to ask about training and opportunities for possible volunteer positions.

I start getting responses the next day, and the next, and the next. Details are explained about the difference between federal, state, county, and city programs. Some of the responses feel open, and some do not. I play phone tag with the county emergency management department. When we do connect I discover we have more in common than a desire to participate in emergency preparedness. She had worked in the Public School system like I have; talking to her was easy and comfortable. She asked about my current occupation, so I told her about Healing Touch and she was interested to know more about me. We made an appointment to meet at her office, which is near the health food store where I work one day a week. At about the same time I was accepted into a CERT training program, which happened to start in a couple of weeks.

OVERWHELMING IMPRESSIONS
The following week when I arrive at the emergency management office, I am surprised at the security. I have to sign in and badge-up. There are cops, firemen, official and busy people in cubicles all over the place. Where the heck am I? I am retrieved by a friendly face and familiar voice. She takes me behind the scenes, in a very up-close and personal, yet surreal manner. I am given a tour of the Emergency Operations Center where people gather to support first responders in a disaster. On this day, no one was here. There is no emergency. All the stations sit empty. The high tech computers, phone lines, wall-size four-part television screens are blank and quiet… just waiting. Recent activations included flooding, severe weather, and the planning for a memorial to honor police officers killed in the line of duty... My son is a rookie police officer, I often stop for coffee near a fallen officer memorial, these disasters feel close to home. I am duly impressed and feel the impact of this space on more than my mind.

We sit to discuss the flyers, brochures and volunteer paperwork that are spread out in the EOC conference room. When I am asked what position I am interested in as a volunteer, I do not have it in me to pretend. I tell her the truth. I want to help those who sit in those chairs, in that highly stressful environment, and I can do that with Healing Touch. I talk more than I want to and I am not sure I make sense. So I jump in with how I am willing to answer phones, file papers, or even man a door. She has a few questions about Healing Touch. She told me they have tried to bring in massage therapists but many personnel were skeptical to this kind of ‘pampering’ when so many people need help out in the field. We discuss the differences that Healing Touch offers. The space can be secluded, or it can be the kitchen or break room; the simple presence of a Healing Touch volunteer might be a much better fit in an EOC. Then she asked me if I could give a talk about Healing Touch, a short informational lecture to key personnel. “Yes, of course”, I said. “I teach an introductory class that can be modified to fit time constraints”. We walked together back to her cubical. I was elated, and in shock. Was I, like, just accepted in here? AS a Healing Touch volunteer?

IT GETS SIMPLE – WITH HELP
As we draw toward conclusion, our conversation turns to my failed community involvement project. She tells me that she also works with neighbors to plan how they can help each other and she would be more than happy to come out to my house and talk to my neighbors. What do you know? All I have to do is invite them. We set the date and just like that, I have something planned, organized, and someone else is going to do the talking. I came home with a few forms to fill out, sign and mail back. I guess that’s it… Once I go through a background check, I will be a registered emergency volunteer worker.

A few days later, I typed up a different form. This one is just an invitation for coffee and discussion about neighborhood emergency preparation. It took fifteen minutes to drive around and hand these out. Wouldn’t you know, Trailer Man just happened to be on the highway, picking up his mail. All I had to do was pull over, roll down my window and hand him a piece of paper. I took the time to introduce myself, and as he held the invitation, haltingly, and with difficulty he said, “Earl, my name is Earl”.

FAST FORWARD – THREE MONTHS
I have completed the nine week CERT training and simulation drill. I have been issued a state Emergency Worker Identification Card and Saturday was the neighborhood meeting. Two days before the meeting, I once again handed out flyers sent and made by the county that look oh, so official, reminding my neighbors to come. Nothing seems to have changed as I drove down the bumpy, muddy, driveway except my fear. There were no words from Earl, and the door didn’t open much farther. But I know his name, and his name is Earl.

What I hope I shared in this article:
• If you have a desire to help – come forward
• If you don’t hear the answer you are expecting – let them or someone else know again
• If you don’t know how to begin – begin anyway
• Failure is just another way to spell success
• Call local and national well-known resources
• Read Christina Brugman’s Not If, When in February’s Energy Magazine
• If you get discouraged - talk about it
• Expect the unexpected
• Be willing to test your assumptions
• If you think you know your neighbor, give your heart a chance to get to know them better
• Paradox: This does not take a lot of time, and yet does not happen overnight

FROM BERNIE

May 11.2011

To All Wonderful Friends in the HT Community,
What a wonderful surprise –I still can’t believe it was I sitting in that chair at our community meeting receiving the Love Notes to Bernie from the HT Community, stories from my life by Dawn and Sherri, the Shining Star Certificate presented by Lisa Gordon, the Flowers, the Cake, and the pictures to remember all of you taken and sent by Kathryn. WOW! I also received a letter from the HT Worldwide Foundation that you had made a donation I my honor to be used for research and outreach and I thank you!!

I have so many wonderful memories of these last 15 years here in the Northwest and I will never forget April 9, 2011. I will continue to attend meetings of the HT Community as long as I can and encourage all of you to invite others in your communities to take advantage of the workshops, and group practice sessions, as you develop your unique ways to make sure HT continues to be alive in the Northwest.

Love to All,

OPRAH AND BARBARA
By Barb Dahl, BSN, RN, HTCP/HTCI

How grandiose of me! Still, Oprah and I have a lot in common besides the fact that we’re both retiring this month. She was alone in the TV market when her show went on the airwaves 25 years ago. I was totally alone when I left Janet Mentgen and my healing community in Denver and moved back to Washington 23 years ago and taught my first class in a Methodist church in West Seattle. We were both pioneers -- communicating ideas and ideals for the first time in our respective communities. I’m sure that Oprah had no idea how her name and influence would soar in the worldwide community. I certainly had no idea that I was taking on the role of a trailblazer for an international community of healers. Both communities were about changing lives -- about making a difference.

Letting go is hard. The more important something is in your life, the harder it is. It’s all about attachment and I am still very attached to the Healing Touch Community and “the work.” It changed my life.

“Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” Dr. Seuss

AWARDS

The Encyclopedia of Energy Medicine, by our own Linnie Thomas, has won the Nautilus Silver Award. Cindi Dale’s The Subtle Body won the Nautilus Gold Award. The encyclopedia is still a finalist for book-of-the-year. The winners of that award will be announced in June.

We need to promote energy healing, and in the case of the encyclopedia, HTP is mentioned often. So go to your local libraries, public and scholastic, and ask for copies. This puts the books in front of the eyes of the librarians who order books.
[In the case of King County Library System, you can even recommend new books online!]

THE ART OF LIVING WORKSHOP

INVITATION TO SOUL RHYTHMS

Dear Friends,

Imagine long, sunny, warm days ~ feasting on vistas of flowers, green lawns, trees, water, and mountains ~ away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life ~ eating delicious meals prepared by someone else ~ having time alone to relax and reflect ~ being with a wonderful group of women ... sharing, creating, discovering and playing together ~ reconnecting with inner rhythms and the rhythms of nature. Ahhhhhhhhhh! Sound good, if so ...

Come join Dianne Frothingham and me this summer for a weekend SoulCollage retreat that includes all of this and much more at the lovely, Dumas Bay Center located in Federal Way. We will begin early Saturday morning, July 30 and end Monday morning, August 1 after breakfast and saying goodbye to new and old friends. Though we can't guarantee sunny days, we feel this will be a weekend of renewal and re-membering, a time to connect more deeply with ourselves, with others and with our beautiful Puget Sound.

If you have been curious about SoulCollage or have already begun the process, this is a perfect gift to yourself. For me, SoulCollage is a simple yet powerful process of self-discovery and healing. It requires no special skills - ANYONE & EVERYONE can do it! You will often create cards that will totally surprise and delight you! Woven throughout the weekend will be many other wonderful activities including morning t'ai chi, time in nature, poetry, and energetic & transformational healing practices.

I hope you will join us! Space is limited so please call or email me for a flyer to register. Feel free to invite your friends or pass the flyer on to anyone else you think might be interested. Also contact me if you have any questions. For more information about SoulCollage® go to www.soulcollage.com.

Many Thanks!

PASSAGES
by Barb Dahl, BSN, RN, HTCP/HTCI

With the newly bestowed Accreditation, the Healing Touch Program moves into a new era of possibility. The hope, of course, is that Energy Medicine as it is taught and practiced in HT will find favor with the institutions now that we’re accredited. May it be so. CEO, Lisa Mentgen Gordon, and her husband, Chris, were our guests at the Regional Community Meeting in Olympia earlier this month. Their vision for HT is as great as her mother’s, Janet Mentgen, founder of HT, and their commitment to the success of “our” program is one of enthusiasm and sacrifice. It’s got to be a roller-coaster ride for this young couple raising three children. Their home is also the office of HTP where staff meets the needs of a growing organization.

Bernie Clarke was honored by the community she has served for so many years – and continues to serve. Dawn Warnaca had interviewed Bernie years ago as part of the class project and she provided details that most of us didn’t know. Sherri Cote put together a lovely album of notes and cards that had been submitted on the sly.

I chatted with Lisa about creating a department for “tenured” HT Instructors so that Bernie and I could stay active without having to jump through all the hoops of certification. She seemed to like the idea.

Carol Komitor was inspirational as always talking about HT and animals. A reminder that it’s not too late to sign up for the Level 1 HTA that Carol is teaching in the Olympia area May 14th & 15th. Contact Wanda Buckner at wandabuckner@comcast.net.

It was a time of reconnecting with dear old friends and connecting with new friends. It was a day filled with love and laughter. Maybe the best part of Healing Touch is community – wherever you are. The next community gathering is a Regional Conference scheduled for November. The details are being worked out now. And of course there is the national Conference in San Antonio in August. Pass me a fan, please.

Blessings, Barb

REGARDING ANNOUNCEMENTS
I just love passing on all the announcements you send me about your upcoming classes and workshops. So many great offerings! It would be most helpful if you could send them as a Word document with no pictures. I am not able to re-format pdf or publisher files to make them go in the newsletter, and I don't have time to re-type everything. Sometimes a link to a website is the easiest and best solution. Thanks. Christina.
THE NEWSLETTER NEEDS TO CHANGE
As I mentioned at the Regional Gathering, it has become very cumbersome to manage the newsletters. For the last 10 years I have been sending them as mail on AOL, but that involves more than 25 groups for the nearly-400 addresses.Copy and paste 26 times! Lately your spam detectors have been tossing them back and I have to look up each address and send it out again in small groups. There were a few alternatives mentioned at the meeting which I am following up on. Some of them cost money, and some of them require that the recipients subscribe. If any of you manage newsletters, I'd be interested in what you do. My technological capacity is limited, so keep that in mind.

The college is set in a garden oasis, within short walking distance to most of the the primary places to see in Jerusalem. Because of the unrest in the area, I did not feel 1) St. George's College, "Palestine of Jesus" course, May 23-June 5, 2012. Cost: $2905, which includes all meals, accommodations and fees.
2) Healing Touch Level One, June 6-8, 2012. 6th/7th: course work at St. George's Collegthis would be a good idea, until now. If things change, that's what trip insurance is all about! Here is the plan:

e; 8th: will be spent in local hospitals using HT techniques. One does not have to take the "Palestine of Jesus" course to take the HT class and vice versa.
3) Optional side trips, following the HT class, for those not taking "Palestine of Jesus" course.

Depending on what is on the calendar at the time, we will be able to attend musical performances and do other things of cultural note.

Go to St. George's College Jerusalem (http://www.sgcjerusalem.org/) to find out more about the classes and the college.
Go to Healing Touch Program (www.healingtouchprogram.com/) to Level I class (in the section on Classes) to find out about the class.more
I urge you to start saving your shekels so you can join me for this wonderful experience. Any questions, email me or call: 503-230-2331.
I am working on getting airfare estimates, which are separate from the course costs. Frequent Flyer miles are good for such a long trip. If you want to be kept informed of the costs and of the plans as they are finalized, please let me know. If this is not your cup of mint tea (the specialty there) that is fine, just let me know so I don't bother you with additional emails.

Shalom, Salaam, Peace! Constance
