LETTER FROM JANET
by Barbara Dahl, RN, BSN, HTCI
While going through the papers of Janet Mentgen, founder of the Healing Touch Program, a letter was found that she had written in response to questions sent from students who had just completed Level 5. The letter contains the ESSENCE of Healing Touch and is an important touchstone during this time of transition for the organization. My thanks to Cynthia Hutchison for sharing it with the instructors. The letter is dated January 4, 2002 and includes the following excerpts:
“There are no specific answers as each individual must grow and progress at their own rate and time…Regarding the improper use of technique in a sequence, who is to say what is proper and correct. My experience in working with technique is that it is simply a guideline to get us going in the right direction. From there, the energy is the appropriate guide.
“For me, as my practice has developed I have become more gentle and use fewer techniques. This is the style that I have grown into and it has taken a while to become comfortable with less. This goes for the drama as well. Healing does not require a show that reflects how good the healer is with their techniques.
“Regarding the improper choice of modality for the case at hand, I would consider this to be lack of a basic knowledge and inexperience on the part of the healer. Working from principle, not technique, is the best way to avoid this problem. Use a full body technique to start in order to bring balance and harmony to the client… Then focus on the specific area that is in trouble, selecting a modality that will address the problem. Finish with a closing technique to bring balance and grounding to the client. Some techniques can be used alone and fulfill all of these steps by simple intention of the practitioner…Our intent is to keep the work simple… I would not consider myself to have any expertise of the Level (3 ) chelation technique until I had done at least 100 sessions and received (my italics) at least 20.
“We cannot put healing energy in a box with a specific outcome; it is what it is. Our task as practitioners is to learn to observe from a point of truth and then create a language to describe the work.”
It would seem that summer has finally arrived in the Pacific Northwest. Enjoy.
