Holding Space
(adapted from Heather Plett, heatherplett.com)

What does it mean to hold space for someone else? It means that we are willing to walk alongside another person in whatever journey they’re on without judging them, making them feel inadequate, trying to fix them, or trying to impact the outcome. When we hold space for other people, we open our hearts, offer unconditional support, and let go of judgement and control.

Sometimes we find ourselves holding space for people while they hold space for others. When my mom was dying, the assisted care nurses held space for me while I held space for Mom. Though I knew nothing about the nurses’ support systems, I suspect there were others holding space for them as they did this challenging and meaningful work. It’s virtually impossible to be a strong space holder unless we have others who will hold space for us. Even the strongest leaders, coaches, nurses, and healers need to know that there are some people with whom they can be vulnerable and weak without fear of being judged.

In my own roles as energy healer, teacher, facilitator, mother, grandmother and friend, I do my best to hold space for other people in the same way. It’s not always easy, because I have a very human tendency to want to fix people, give them advice, or judge them for not being further along the path than they are. However, I keep trying because I know that it’s important. At the same time, there are people in my life who I trust to hold space for me.

To truly support people in their own growth, transformation or grief, we can’t do it by taking their power away (i.e. trying to fix their problems), shaming them (i.e. implying that they should know more than they do), or overwhelming them (i.e. giving them more information than they’re ready for). We have to be prepared to step to the side so that they can make their own choices, offer them unconditional love and support, give gentle guidance when it’s requested, and make them feel safe even when they make mistakes.

Holding space is not something that’s exclusive to teachers, healers, or palliative care providers. It is something that ALL of us can do for each other – for our partners, children, friends, family, neighbors, and even strangers who strike up conversations as we are traveling or doing our shopping.

Here are some ways to do this important job of holding space:

1. Give people permission to trust their OWN intuition and wisdom.
2. Give people only as much information as they can handle.
Give some simple instructions or a few handouts, but don’t overwhelm them with far more than they could process in their current state.

 3. Don’t take their power away.
When we take decision-making out of other people’s hands, we leave them feeling useless and incompetent. There may be some times when we need to step in and make hard decisions for others (i.e. when they’re dealing with an addiction or planned suicide and an intervention feels like the only thing that will save them), but in almost every other case, people need their own autonomy to make choices (even our children).

4. Keep your own ego out of it.
This is a big one. We all get caught in that trap now and then – when we begin to believe that someone else’s success is dependent on our intervention, or when we think that their failure reflects poorly on us, or when we’re convinced that whatever emotions they choose to unload on us are about us instead of them. It’s a trap I sometimes feel myself slipping into when I teach. I can become more concerned about my own success (Do the students like me? Do their evaluations reflect on my ability to teach?) than about the success of my students. But that doesn’t serve anyone, even me. To truly support the other person’s growth, we need to keep our egos out of it and create space where they have the opportunity to grow and learn.

5. Make them feel safe enough to fail.
When people are growing, learning, or going through grief or transition, they are bound to make some mistakes along the way. When we, as their space holders, withhold judgement and shame, we offer them the opportunity to reach inside themselves to find the courage to take risks and the resilience to keep going even when they fail. When we let them know that failure is simply part of the journey and not the end of the world, they’ll spend less time beating themselves up for it and more time learning from their mistakes.

6. Give guidance and help with humility and thoughtfulness.
A wise space holder knows when to withhold guidance (i.e. when a person feels foolish and inadequate) and when to offer it gently (i.e. when the other person asks for it or is too lost to know what to ask for). This is a careful dance that we all must do when we hold space for other people. Recognizing the areas in which they feel most vulnerable and incapable and offering the right kind of help without shaming them takes practice and humility.

7. Create a container for complex emotions, fear or trauma.
When people feel they are held in a deeper way than they are used to, they feel safe enough to allow complex emotions to surface that might normally remain hidden. Someone who is practicing holding space knows that this can happen and will be prepared to hold it in a gentle, supportive, nonjudgmental way. In healing circles, we talk about ‘holding the rim’ for people. The circle becomes the space where people feel safe enough to fall apart without fearing that this will leave them permanently broken or that they will be ridiculed or shamed by others in the circle. Someone is always there to offer support, strength and courage.

This is NOT easy work. We cannot do it if we are overly emotional ourselves, if we haven’t done the hard work of looking into our own shadow, or if we don’t trust the people we are holding space for.

8.  Allow them to make different decisions and to have different experiences than you would. Holding space is about respecting each person’s differences and recognizing that those differences may lead to them making choices that we would not make. Sometimes, for example, they make choices based on cultural norms that we cannot understand from within our own experience. When we hold space, we release control and we honor differences.

Holding space is not something that we can master overnight, or that can be adequately addressed in a list of tips like this. It’s a complex practice that evolves as we practice it, and it is unique to each person and each situation.

It is my intention to be a life-long learner in what it means to hold space for others, so if you have experiences that are different than mine and want to add anything to this post, please add it in the Comments section on my website mandalahealingtouch.com, or send me a message to mailto:mandalaHT@gmail.com.

EDEN ENERGY MEDICINE
Powerful Self-care Tools for Staying Healthy & Strong
Instructor:  Janet Partlow

Many of us make a point of getting regular energy healing work: we see our acupuncturists, or Healing Touch or Reiki practitioners. Many of us get remarkable healing results from these visits: better energy, sleep, relief from pain and other health issues and great help with managing chronic stress.
These are wonderful healers & healing experiences. But one of the challenges is that the effects of these treatments  only last a few days to a week or more and then we are almost back where we started. This is where Donna Eden Energy Medicine really shines. What Donna teaches are ways in which we can go home after our appointments with our practitioners and work to sustain the great treatment we have received, building on the great healing that we received.

Donna is now in her 70’s, but over a long life as an extraordinarily gifted healer, she has developed fabulous tools for how you can give yourself a daily energy treatment. She calls it the Five Minute routine. In this workshop, we will learn these specific tools that Donna teaches. After some lecture, discussion and demo we will then practice these techniques. These tools focus strongly on managing stress, energy, hormonal imbalances and keeping ourselves well-grounded to the planet.

You will leave the workshop with some very powerful tools for keeping your energy strong and healthy. In addition, these are tools you can share with family and friends. For healers who are in active practice, these tools are a wonderful adjunct to what we already know and do.  This is remarkable medicine and an opportunity you won’t want to miss!

Date: Sunday October 25th 10 am to 2 pm
Location: Downtown Olympia;  more details sent on registration
Cost: $75

SHAMANIC EGG CLEANSING

A Tool for Energetic Protection
Instructor:  Janet Partlow

Throughout Latin America, traditional healers or curanderas do a process of energetic cleansing, using a fresh egg. This technique is called limpia which is a Spanish word for cleansing. After sweeping through the energy field with the egg, they then brush the energy field with branches of fresh herbs in a sweeping process called a barrida. When one of their clients struggles with low energy, fatigue and stress, when there is an intractable illness, when a person feels deeply stuck in their life, this process of shamanic egg cleansing is used as a mainstay of healing.
Three years ago two curanderas Doña Isabel and Doña Olinda came to Seattle from their home in the coastal deserts of Northern Peru to teach a workshop; I was privileged to not only experience this egg cleansing, but also to learn how to do it. This experience proved to be one of the most profound and effective healing experiences in my life. I have since done this process on many clients and continue to be amazed by its benefits.
In this workshop you will learn how to do this egg cleansing for yourself. We will go over the background of this process, watch a demonstration and then practice on ourselves. By the end of this workshop you will be able to do a shamanic egg cleansing on yourself, your family and friends, sharing this powerful clearing technique with others in your life.  It is also a powerful regular self-care practice to keep your energy field clear and bright.
This egg cleansing is rarely taught, so this workshop is a great opportunity to learn how to do it.

Seattle Clinic

Many volunteers are still  needed to staff the Seattle Clinic in October.  This clinic provides free medical, dental, and vision care to the underserved members of our community.  Last year 4000 people were served in 4 days. They came from as far away as Montana.  The organizers need support staff, people to set up and tear down the clinic, etc.  I don't know if they need more  nurses or not.  It starts at the crack of dawn, but the people being served wait in line starting at 10 PM the night before. Go to this link for more information and to volunteer:   http://seattlecenter.org/skcclinic/

HEALING TOUCH POTLUCK
September 26, 2016 11 AM to 4 PM
Eatonville, WA
“Poetry as Healer: Using Creative Expression for Self-Care” presented by Sharon Fletcher and Dawn Warnaca.

You are invited to join in circle for creating and sharing poems of healing, connection and community.  Your voice is an essential part of this healing, for you are already known and celebrated among the ancestors, who have been singing healing stories since time began.

Poetry offers this potent, distilled language.
A poem gets to the heart of things.
                        It is a natural medicine
                        that extends solace and relief,
gives a cathartic voice to suffering,
                        reveals insight and shows us
what it is to be human.
~ John Fox from The Healing Environment ~

In our circle we will invite Poetry to be the Healer, deep listening and respect to be the medicine, and our pens to blend the elements of personal experiences, emotions, Spirit, and Mother Nature to bring forth healing words from within.  Our own words, when voiced and shared build a powerful healing force that continues to resonate within and without, closing the gaps of separation, and creating physical, emotional and spiritual healing.

"Poetry is simply speaking truth.  Each of us has a truth as unique as our own fingerprints.  Without knowing that truth, without speaking it aloud, we cannot know
who we are and that we are already whole.  Our poetry is its voice.
To hear that voice is to know the power to heal."
~  Rachel Naomi Remen  ~

NO prior experience in writing poetry is needed to experience and enjoy this journey into
Self Healing.  Your words and voices are needed for complete healing within our circle.

Poetry is Medicine when you can visit the scary places

Seattle Clinic

The second annual 4-day Seattle Clinic will be offered at the Seattle Center in late October.  Last year about 3500 people got free medical, dental, and vision care (including glasses) thanks to 1500+ volunteers.  They need medical types and support staff (escorts, check-in folks, etc).

Here is a short video about the event last year  https://vimeo.com/124850873

To register, go to http://volunteers.seattlecenter.org/

Be aware that volunteers need to start at 5 AM and the shift goes to 6 PM or later.  This doesn't sound so bad when you realize the patients line up at 10 PM the night before and wait all night to be admitted.

You get a free t-shirt and lots of good food. Plus it's really fun.

I inquired about having HT offered but haven't heard back yet.

I am signed up for Oct 23 & 24. I have room for several people to stay if you are from out of town.  Be aware that I have cats.

If you have any questions, contact me at cebrug@gmail.com

Support for HT in Nepal

Nepal needs your Support!
Relief for the Healing Touch Community in Nepal
Our friend, Aparna, survived the devastating 7.8 earthquake in Nepal. This is worse than the Haiti earthquake which registered 7.0. The Nepal earthquake was 8 times worse than Haiti. She said she was on the third floor taking a seminar and the next thing she knew, she was outside in the garden - terrifying!  She spent several days out in the rain and cold, and thank God she is alive.
We have set up a rescue mission to send funds to her for the Healing Touch community and want you to have an opportunity to participate. Please go to the PayPal link below and you can make a donation directly to the HT Nepal Relief fund. We also will accept credit cards and checks. We are in touch with Aparna and will make certain she receives your loving donation.
Pleased keep Aparna, her Healing Touch community and Nepal in your prayers.

HOW TO HELP OUR HT FRIENDS IN NEPAL

Hello HT friends,

I finally got through to Aparna on the phone tonight (morning in Kathmandu). She & her family, and the people in the Healing Touch community there are all safe. Aparna said her house is still OK, but she has been sleeping outside because of the ongoing after-quakes. She said many of the older houses in the Kathmandu valley have collapsed, leaving many thousands of people homeless. Her 2 older brothers lived in the same house where they all were born, in a small village west of Kathmandu - their house totally collapsed, so they are now homeless, as are most of the people in their village.

Aparna has been out doing Healing Touch for people in the tent camps & hospital areas, as I knew she would be.

I specifically asked her what was the best way to get money to her to help those most in need. She said to donate to a fund being raised by her son, Rajendra Bhatta, who is a news broadcaster for a Nepali-speaking network in London. He can get the money directly to Aparna. She says she will use it to help buy food, drinking water and other essential items for those who have lost everything. This is the website for his fundraising effort: http://www.gofundme.com/gurkhachannel

It would be great if HTWF can also raise funds, if they can figure out how to get them to Aparna. In the meantime, we can send our love & healing energy to the Nepali people.

In appreciation for all your efforts,
Penny

STONES FOR HEALING:
Working with crystals as a healing practice.

Stones are of the Earth. They are ancient beings who carry the deep wisdom of a world we humans have never known. They are of solid, crystalized earth, and at the same time, they are energy beings. In the years that I have worked with them as healers, I have been more and more astounded by what they can do.

In this workshop, we enter the world of stones and learn new ways of working with their healing properties. We will learn specific healing techniques from a wide range of sources, practicing these tools on each other. We will leave the workshop with a whole new set of tools for the healing toolkit, and also a profound sense of well-being. And also, this workshop will be a lot of fun!

This is an excellent opportunity to learn how to partner with stones for healing work. We will focus on identifying some wonderful stones, learning from them what medicine they carry and how we can apply this to our own lives and healing work. The workshop will be a blend of lecture, discussion and and practice time on the massage table, learning healing techniques. While there are no prerequisites for this class, it is especially suited those who work closely with Mother Earth, helping to heal ourselves, our families and friends, and/or massage practitioners, energy healers, herbalists and the like.

Some specific things we will explore:
•  We will learn/ review how to choose, clean and charge stones.
•  We will do a guided shamanic journey to the Crystal Realm, to meet our personal stone Guide & Teacher.
•  We will learn several specific healing techniques to clear, to cleanse and to recharge the energy body.
•  Students will receive a handout packet, including resources of books, internet resources, etc.
.

Marijuana as Medicine

Marijuana as Medicine
A workshop on high cannabinoid marijuana for healing

Marijuana is first and foremost a medicinal plant. In recent times it has been denounced as a wicked weed: those who like to use the high THC varieties have been demonized by others who consider such behavior immoral, illegal and etc. In the midst of the cultural story about what an evil herb it is, we have completely lost sight of the fact that it has powerful medicinal effects and that the right kind of medicinal marijuana can be profoundly healing. Our ancestors used this medicinal plant for hundreds if not thousands of years. Their understanding of this medicine has been lost in the all the hoopla about reefer madness.
With this history, it has been hard to find good information about medicinal marijuana. It’s easy to learn about recreational marijuana (high THC) ; there are many recreational users who can point the way to the best kinds. But there are many of us who simply want to use marijuana for chronic pain, for immune support, for fighting cancer, for many other health reasons. We don’t want to get stoned on high THC varieties: we don’t want the munchies and we don’t want to feel drugged. We want to be able to function in our lives, drive a car and go to work without fear of getting busted for on the job use.  For this we need high cannabinoid varieties without high THC.
We need to know the process in Washington state by which we can legally obtain medicinal marijuana. We need to learn what varieties of marijuana are likely to best suit our specific health concerns and the best places to find these herbs. We also need help in sorting through the bewildering array of ways to take it:  smoke or vapor?  Edibles or cannabutter?
Infused oils or tinctures?  There are so many choices and it can be very confusing.
In this workshop we will dive deeply into the world of medicinal marijuana. In the process we will learn what we need to know to better make this decision about using this powerful medicinal plant, how to find good medicinal products and how to use it in our own lives.
